The Fraser Coast – a naturally beautiful location that has taken on the mantle of top tourist attractions and activities in a region that enjoys more than endless summers but provides the opportunity to kick back and chill out or indulge in the affordable shopping, enticing markets, endless beaches, unique art and craft and cuisine dining or step back in time in Maryborough through an interactive Time Capsule with informative displays and guided tours through the former Maryborough Heritage Gateway now known as “The Portside Centre”. These tours take you on an amazing journey back to the time around 150 years ago when Maryborough was established on the Mary River, a thriving river port settlement founded on timber, sugar, agriculture and engineering, and the place where around 22,000 new settlers first took their steps on Australian Soil. Maryborough was one of Australia’s largest and busiest ports.
Portside now offers beautiful open spaces and spectacular river views and endless opportunity to learn the history of Maryborough against the backdrop of gracious and beautiful colonial architecture.
Today the “Heritage City” boasts a healthy centre with shops, businesses, hotels, motels, quality schools and sporting facilities, dining venues and numerous historic attractions and museums that offer interest to all ages. The city is home to numerous beautiful parks and gardens and is well noted for the large number of Queenslander Style timber homes, many lovingly restored to their former glory to be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.
